Westover Primary School

Art and Design

Art Intent Statement

Our school value of creativity underpins our entire curriculum for Art and Design at Westover Primary. Throughout their time at the school, the pupils at Westover will explore artistic techniques through a rich cross-curricular approach.

At Westover, the children will explore a wide range of chosen mediums. Our aim is to give all children the confidence to express themselves using a range of different materials, to use drawing, painting and sculpting to bring their ideas to life. They will practise art and design techniques when using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.

Art and Design is an important part of our curriculum and we aim to engage and inspire all children through creative planning opportunities. We believe that Art and Design encourages children to develop their creativity, nurture their imagination and provides children with a variety of ways to express their thoughts and emotions.

We want our children to know how Art and Design has contributed to our culture, historically and presently. Work by key artists will be explored and create links to topics so the children will begin to understand the development of their particular art forms. We hope key works will inspire children to create their own artworks in particular styles and themes. At Westover Primary, we hope to foster and continually grow a love of Art and Design as the children progress through our school, giving all of our children the opportunities and skills needed to develop their own creativity.
