Design and Technology Intent Statement

Design and Technology is a creative and practical subject, which allows children to let their imagination and creativity flow freely. Following the National Curriculum closely, children will use a range of skills to develop their creativity, their critical thinking and their understanding of the world around them. Design and Technology provides children with the opportunity to draw upon their own inspirations, using a variety of skills including mathematics, science, computing and art to develop Design and Technology in a forever changing world.

At Westover Primary School, we aim to provide a wide range of Design and Technology activities that link with our current topics and cover a range of skills including textiles, construction, cooking and materials. The children can choose their own methods to build and apply their skills to develop their learning.

All children are given the chance to understand and apply their Design and Technology skills through a 5- part process: observing/ exploring, designing, making, evaluating, and improving. The National Curriculum for Design and Technology states that “pupils should be taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making.”

Throughout their time at Westover Primary, children will be encouraged to think critically in order to evaluate and improve their designs, as well as to build on their prior learning, year on year. We aim for our children to question and think innovatively about the world around them in order to design and develop their own products with a purpose in mind.
