Religious Education (RE)
Curriculum Intent
At Westover we believe that the study of religion is vital to foster respectful, caring attitudes towards others and to prepare our children for the responsibilities, opportunities and experiences they will encounter in our ever-changing world. RE is the chance for children to explore their thoughts and feelings about the world and to ask big questions about the things that puzzle and surprise them.
Our curriculum builds up religious concepts that allow for the development of deep thinking about issues and provides the chance to explore these concepts through art, drama and music.
We want our children to become reflective learners who engage in systematic enquiry that encourages them to interpret, evaluate and respond to questions and a variety of concepts, beliefs and practices within religions and to compare them to their own and others’ cultural and life experiences. We want children to gain and deploy the skills needed to engage seriously with religions and worldviews, so that they can articulate beliefs, find out about and investigate key concepts and questions of belonging, meaning, purpose and truth.
Through RE, we help children to recognise the diversity which exists within and between communities and amongst individuals both within our city and wider afield. We want to empower children to feel comfortable to express their opinions and to list to the views of others’. We aim for our children to be ready to take their place in the wider community as they move into secondary education.
