Curriculum Intent

Our school value of creativity underpins our entire curriculum for Art at Westover. Throughout their time at the school, the children at Westover will explore a diverse range of artists, artistic techniques and styles.

Every child will be exposed to a wide range of mediums; our intent being, that they have the confidence to express themselves using different equipment and materials, enabling them to bring their creations to life and evaluate their work. They will practise art and design techniques through the study of the formal elements of art: colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.

We strongly believe that Art is an important part of our curriculum and that it is important to engage and inspire all children through creative planning opportunities. Art encourages children to become resilient, develop their creativity, nurture their imagination and provides them with a variety of ways to express their thoughts and emotions.

Throughout their Art education at Westover, the children will explore key artists, with the aim that they will begin to understand the development of each artists’ particular art form and emulate these forms in their own work. The children will receive visits from local artists and, wherever possible, visit galleries exhibitions to further widen their artistic experiences.

At Westover, we hope to foster and continually develop a love of Art in our children, which will give them the opportunities and skills needed to develop their own creativity. We are determined that our children will leave primary school with a firm understanding of how Art contribute to our culture; historically, currently, in our community and across the world.
