World of Stories New Books in Classrooms!

Westover Primary and Preschool is working with the National Literacy Trust as part of their World of Stories initiative.  Last year, we were gifted books that went into our fabulous school library.  This year, we have used the books donated to supplement our reading areas in our classes.  In assembly today, Mr Upfield showed us some of the great new books.  Look out for some of these fantastic new titles in your class libraries!

What a Fabulous World Book Day 2025!

Well done everyone on your fantastic costumes and those of you who spoke confidently about which character you were dressed up as.  We started World Book Day 2025 with an assembly where we look at the joy that can come through reading and also learnt about the WBD Books on offer this year.  Don’t forget to spend your token soon.

Guinea Pigs Have Arrived!

On Wednesday the school Animal Welfare Team went on a special trip to Pets at Home to get the final items for our new Guinea Pigs.  The A.W.T even got to do a trial run with Mr Upfield’s guinea pigs that he brought in from home.

The children busied themselves with creating a care rota and information posters.

Then, after the children went home, we took delivery of our very own guinea pigs – two males from Longdown Dairy Farm.  They are currently enjoying their new environment.  They are yet to be named  and this will be one of the first jobs of the AWT.  Exciting times at Westover!

Guinea Pigs at Westover!

Guinea Pigs at Westover!

Your children may well have already shared the exciting news that we are looking to add two new additions to our Westover School Family.  Over the course of this half term, classes will be working on earning special points for kindness towards one another.  The more points we earn, the closer we get to getting two school pets.

Educational research shows that there can be huge benefits to having access to animals at school – be it reading to them, spending some calming time with them or helping to care for them – and we can’t wait to get started.

The guinea pigs will be situated in our school library and use hypoallergenic bedding.  If you have any questions regarding them, please contact Mr Upfield.  Whilst we do keep up to date records of children’s allergies, if you think your child may be allergic to guinea pigs or fur, kindly let the office know.

Katya Balen – Fantastic KS2 Author Visit

We were so lucky to have award-winning author Katya Balen join years 3, 4, 5 and 6 for an assembly all about her books and how she goes about creating them.  We loved being able to ask her lots of questions – especially Turtles and Seals classes who have enjoyed her books previously.

A big thank you to Katya, Hayling Island Bookshop and the Schools Library Service for organising the event.

Be sure to visit the library and get your hands on one of Katya’s brilliant books!
