Dolphins – Autumn 1, Week 3

September 19, 2025

What a fantastic first few weeks back to the school year!

Your little dolphins have settled into Year 1 life beautifully, learning routines and expectations of KS1.

This week, we have begun our Year 1 phonics learning where the children are consolidating their Phase 3 knowledge and showing off their fantastic reading and spelling of tricky words.

We have been exploring ‘how to write a sentence’ in English using ‘The Snail and The Whale’ to help us. The children have been brilliant at identifying that every sentence needs a subject and a verb but can be extended with an object and a where. We have even been looking at capital letters and full stops too!

In maths, we have completed our first unit (numbers to 10) where we have been looking at part-whole models to find number bonds, doubles and halves and comparing and ordering these numbers. The children have been using their star words like ‘greater’, ‘fewer’ and ‘less than’ to explain their thinking in full sentences.

In science, Dolphins blew Miss Hathway away with their fabulous cutting skills when sorting animals into: mammal, bird or fish!

It may be early, but we have created some beautiful Christmas cards which have been/will be sent home very soon. All artwork where orders have been placed must be returned to school by Monday 29th September with cards being delivered by the beginning of December so that you can send them out to friends and family.

Reading records have been sent home. Supporting your child to read 5x weekly will greatly support their development. Document this in their reading record and return daily for your child to take one step closer to earning their next reading badge!

Again, what an amazing first few weeks and group of children!

Have a lovely, restful weekend cosying up in the autumn rain.

Miss Hathway.
