Spring 1 – Weeks 2 & 3

January 24, 2026

We’ve had a wonderfully busy couple of weeks in Pufferfish Class, full of new learning, creativity, and fantastic conversations.

This half term we have moved onto learning Phase 3 digraphs and trigraphs. Flashcards have gone home in the children’s bookbags, please take a few minutes each day to practise them together. Little and often makes a big difference!

In maths, the children have been exploring calendars, learning the days of the week and the months of the year. We’ve had lots of fun spotting patterns, singing songs, and talking about important dates.

We have also introduced a wonderful new book: Coming to England by Floella Benjamin. The children have loved hearing about Floella’s journey, and this led beautifully into our learning about Trinidad.

The class learned fascinating facts about Trinidad, and I have been so impressed with their drawings of the Trinidad and Tobago flag. The children also enjoyed writing phrases like “Quick! It is the Queen!” with great enthusiasm and independence.

We have been learning about different families and recognising that every family looks different, and that every family is special.

We also spent time exploring our school values:

  • Resilience – keeping going even when something is tricky
  • Resourcefulness – finding different ways to solve a problem
  • Creativity – using imagination in learning and play
  • Kindness – showing care in our words and actions

The children showed brilliant examples of how they use these values every day.

In art, we’ve begun learning about Holi, the festival of colours. The children talked about what different colours mean to them and created some beautifully vibrant marble paintings.

Reminders

  • Reading books and reading records need to be in bookbags every Friday so they can be changed.
  • Monday is Library Day – please make sure library books are in bookbags so the children can scan them back in and choose a new one.
  • Wellie boots – can be brought to school and left of children’s pegs so we can make the most of the wet weather!

Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs Mackett
