Spring 1 – Weeks 4 & 5

February 6, 2026

We’ve had an exciting (and very wet!) couple of weeks in Pufferfish, full of learning, exploring, and plenty of puddle jumping in our wellies!

Phonics

This week, we are carrying out our phonics assessments. The children have been working really hard, and continuing to practise at home makes a big difference.

How to support at home

Flashcards:

  • Play “Flashcard Hunt” – hide them around the room, and children read them as they find them.
  • Make a speed challenge — “How many can you read in 1 minute?”

Tricky Words:

  • Write tricky words in chalk outdoors and jump on the word as your child reads it.
  • Stick tricky words on the fridge, doors, or stairs for quick daily practice.

Every little bit helps build confidence. Thank you for your support at home!

Literacy

This week, our story focus was Going on a Lion Hunt, and it inspired some brilliant adventures and writing.

We followed a map around the school grounds and eventually found our lion hiding in the playground! Later in the week, the lion went “missing”, so the children made ‘lost’ posters and delivered them around the school.

They used phrases such as:

  • “He is big.”
  • “He is sad.”
  • “He has sharp teeth.”

I am so proud of the children for using their phonics to write independently.

Maths

In maths, we’ve been working on number bonds to 10 and understanding the different ways to make 10.

How to support at home

  • Use everyday objects: pasta, Lego, grapes — make a pile of 10 and split it into two groups. Ask, “How many here? How many here? How do we make 10?”
  • Number bond pairs: Practise saying the pairs in a rhythm (e.g., “6 add 4 is equal to 10!”).
  • Build with toys: Use toy cars, blocks, coins, or anything that can be grouped.

Thank you so much for coming to see us in class for our Exit Point. We hope watching the children take part in a live Phonics lesson was helpful in showing how we teach phonics, what the learning looks like in the classroom, and where the children are currently working.
The children loved having you there. They were so proud to show off their learning, and they really did work incredibly hard.

I hope you have a lovely weekend!
