Firstly, thank you so much for coming to our exit point on Tuesday afternoon. Your children were so happy to have the opportunity to share their learning with you. I hope you were able to see how brilliantly they are settling into Year 1 from the transition from carpet work to table work. Their knowledge of different animals in science combined with their phonics and English learning really is something to be impressed and proud of!
In English, we have begun looking at question marks. We started by understanding what a question is: a sentence that requires an answer. We looked at which words often begin a question. We then learnt that a question needs to be punctuated with a question mark, not a full stop. Even learning how to form a question mark has been tricky, but they have been super resilient with it! Learning this skill is helping us to prepare for our space book about space which will be filled with ‘Did you know…?’ style questions.
In Maths, we have been looking at 2-D shapes. We have learnt that 2-D shapes have properties like vertices and sides. We have kept our focus on triangles, cylinders, rectangles and squares. We even found out that a square is a rectangle! Unlike the usual oblong rectangle that has two pairs of straight, equal sides, a square has four equal, straight sides. Our minds were blown. We have been sorting shapes by their properties and created patterns and looked at position.
Thank you for supporting your children in returning books as soon as possible, ready for their new books to be sent home.
We have one more week left before half term. We may be tired, but we can do it!
Have a lovely weekend,
Miss Hathway
