Sharks Week 5

October 3, 2025

This week, in Maths, we have started our addition and subtraction unit. We are working on using the formal written methods as well as using mental strategies which will enable us to perform a calculation quickly and most efficiently. For example, round and adjust for 372 + 99, doing 372 + 100 (rounding) then subtracting 1 (adjusting). It was pleasing to see the lesson on rounding for estimation was a success with the majority now able to independently round to varying multiples. Retaining knowledge = happy teacher!

Our creative sides came out in English this week when we watched a Literacy Shed setting video based on Whitby Abbey and we came up with expanded noun phrases about everything we saw on that video using the 5 senses to guide us. Next week, we will look at figurative language (similes, metaphors, personification etc) and create some of our own of these too.

We are super excited to work in groups to create 3 parachutes which will test air resistance – each parachute will differ by one variable, for example, the size of it or the shape of it. We will be starting to make these next week!

If you haven’t already done so, please sign your child up for Bikeability using the online form. This is starting Monday 13th October so not long left now!

This week’s homework is to use Times Table Rock Stars for at least 20 minutes. We are in a battle with Year 6 which adds a competitive element to it and obviously we hope to win!
