Spring 2 Week 1

February 28, 2025

It’s been a brilliant first week back for Year 5! We are already loving our new text ‘FArTHER’, which despite it being a short picture book, there is so much to pull out, infer and link to other areas of our learning. We have already made the links with the Greek myth Daedalus and Icarus as well as the artist and inventor Leonardo Da Vinci. In Maths, we have continued our fractions and decimals learning by looking at thousandths in a range of ways: on place value charts, as fractions and as decimals.

Our History topic this half term is Portsmouth’s very own dockyard. We began this unit by creating a timeline about the history of this – from whose idea it first was to build to modern day! As you will be aware, we are hoping to go on a school trip here to bring the learning to life for the children; however, at the moment, we do not have enough funds for it to go ahead so please consider paying for this ASAP to avoid disappointment.

Finally, we are excited by the news of our newest arrivals to Westover – the guinea pigs! On Friday, during our library time, we were able to see them and even have a stroke of Oreo (Biscoff had seemingly had enough attention for the day as he evaded our attempts to get him out). Next week, if we are as good as we have been this week, we will see about cuddles too!
