This week in Turtles, we busy with both new learning and revisiting key concepts from last half term. In Maths, we continued to look at ratio (which the children are really enjoying!). We began the week looking at scaled shapes and then applied our learnt knowledge of ratio to recipes and proportion tasks – this meant the children also had the chance to go back and test their knowledge of units of measure. We have also furthered this with some children by linking fractions and percentages to our ratio – which especially challenged the thinking of some. In English, we started a new text ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’ (a personal favourite of mine!). This follows our theme of war and the children are adding to their existing knowledge from last half term – specifically linked to ideas of evacuation. The children have been engaged in the idea of writing a narrative and have this week, began gathering strong vocabulary and figurative language to form both a character and a setting description. In Geography, our topic is ‘extreme weather’. In this weeks lesson, they created their own vocabulary banks to begin the unit – they will be referring to this over the course of the next few lessons. Finally in Science, we are learning about the circulatory system – this lesson looked at blood, what it is made up of and the function of the blood components. We ended the lesson by making our own blood smoothie!
