This week in Turtles, we began a new unit on ratio in Maths. The children have really enjoyed trying something new and applying their knowledge of fractions, measure and multiplication to answer some challenges and problem solve efficiently. A select group of children also furthered this knowledge by taking part in an investigation about Smarties! They had a bag of Smarties chocolate and used this to look at probability, ratio, fractions and even created a bar chart to present the results which links to the maths unit ‘statistics’. We will continue this after half term, looking at how we can convert this data into percentages and then looking at pie charts.
In English, we looked at persuasive techniques and wrote a letter linked to an aspect of war or linked to our book ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’. Some children chose to write to parents – encouraging them to evacuate their children – whilst others wrote as a character from the book, persuading the reader to let the young boy stay living in the countryside. The children are really showing progress in their writing skills.
A definite highlight of the week has to be our D.T day, where the children spent the day cooking their three-course meals, specially designed by them! We had some brilliant outcomes and were surprised by the quality of food (and the clean up!). It was lovely to have lots of parents in at the end of the day to see the desserts and even trying some for themselves. The children were incredibly proud of the results!
